13th Annual Girls Can! Event to Feature Actress

The Merze Tate Explorers will celebrate everything from its graduates to state monologue finalists at its annual Girls Can! celebration. This year the event will feature a keynote address by actress Giovonnie Samuels who is best known for her roles in Freedom Writers and Bring it On!

The fundraising reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2022, at the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Conference Center, 601 W. Maple St., Kalamazoo, MI 49008. An Around the World with Explorers Exhibit will begin at 1:30 p.m. This will be an opportunity for the public to see youth-created displays of the 20 landmarks the Explorers have on their bucket lists. Tickets are $25 for the event and are available on Eventbrite. In addition, Giovonnie Samuels will facilitate the workshop, “How to Audition for Hollywood.” For more information CLICK HERE!

The event is hosted by the Girls Scouts Heart of Michigan and will celebrate this year’s Explorer graduates from middle school, high school, and college. In addition, the Kalamazoo Community Foundation will be recognized for its continued support, and Bette Boulding will be celebrated as Volunteer of the Year for 13 years of support as a donor, presenter, and volunteer. Explorer Alumna Sierra Ward will host the event and Jaide Woods-Dawson, a medical student at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, will present a charge to young girls to believe in themselves.

The celebration also will recognized the Girl Scouts of Bible Baptist Church, one of the largest African-American-run troop in Michigan. Scouts will share of their Silver Award project and recognize those being promoted to Daisy. Junior, and Senior scouts.
